"Mankind without Earth is Humanity without a Home" ~S.G. Rainbolt
The author, S.G. Rainbolt, once said that "Mankind without Earth is Humanity without a Home." Knowing that Planet Earth is the only planet for now in our solar system that has known life and usable natural resources to support it.
I agree with him completely and if Earth were having a birthday party there would be approximately 85 billion candles on its cake. Earth is inhabited by a variety of species of animals, including humans, and a vast amount of plants that make it beautiful and provides food and oxygen. Earth has a variety of ecosystems which allows it to have diversity on land and at sea. Food, water and oxygen are plentiful and allow animals and humans to thrive. Yet, we are still searching for other planets to colonize rather than make our beautiful Earth sustainable and everlasting.
Earth looked a lot different 85 billion years ago. It has undergone many transformations including mass extinctions of dinosaurs and other species of plants and animals due to an asteroid strike and several ice ages. Land masses have moved slowly, separated and collided over billions of years and gives Earth its many unique features like canyons, tall mountain peaks, and desert terrains.
Earth has three layers: the crust, the molten mantle, and a dense core of iron and nickel. Earth is the only known planet that has liquid water at its surface. Scientists believe that is why it is the only inhabited planet in our solar system. Earth's composition is 29 percent land and 71 percent water. Its ability to support life makes it a terrestrial planet despite it's many rocky surfaces.
Earth's atmosphere is made of mostly nitrogen and oxygen. There are seven layers to the Earths atmosphere. The Earths atmosphere makes all living things able to survive. The ozone layer protects the Earth from the Sun's harmful Ultra Violet Rays. Without this protective layer all plants and animals would burn up and die.
Earth has unique characteristics compared to other inner planets and outer planets. Earth is an amazing planet and inhabited by diverse living species of animals, insects and birds. It is the only planet in our solar system that we know of so far with living things.
The word Earth comes from the Old English "ertha" and the Anglo-Saxon word "erda" which means ground or land. In 1543 Copernicus studied his sun-centered model of the solar system which put the sun at the center of our solar system. It is actually 1/4 of a day over 365 day which is why we have a leap year every four years. I know that Earth is an important place because people and animals survive on this planet. Why people and animals live on this planet is because all of us and animals need to live on this place.
